Employing a modified coat hanger and vice grips, he tightened it around Cindy’s neck, extinguishing her precious young life. The perpetrators then callously disposed of her body, wrapping it in a shower curtain before discarding it from a mountainside.
The gruesome satisfaction derived by Bittaker and Norris from their heinous act only served to amplify their depraved desires. They sought ways to perpetually relive the horror they had inflicted upon Cindy, as if their unspeakable actions were a trophy to be savored.
2. Andrea Joy Hall – 18 years old
Andrea Hall faced significant financial hardships and resorted to desperate measures such as selling her blood at a blood bank to earn money. Given her financial struggles, she felt grateful whenever she could catch a free ride.
As a regular hitchhiker, she appreciated the generosity of those who offered her rides. On the day Lawrence Bittaker picked her up, she once again expressed gratitude and entered the van. At that moment, Bittaker was alone in the front seat, as he and Norris believed it would be less intimidating for Andrea to see only one man in the vehicle.
While Andrea took the front passenger seat, Roy Norris remained hidden under the bed in the back of the van. Bittaker offered Andrea a drink, and she accepted. As she went to the back of the van to retrieve the drink from the cooler, Norris suddenly emerged from his hiding spot and attacked Andrea, causing her to fall to the ground. Despite being a strong and resilient young woman, Andrea fought back fiercely, resulting in a brutal struggle between her and Norris. However, ultimately Norris overpowered her and gained control.
He restrained her and suppress her resistance. Norris and Bittaker then drove to their secluded location in the San Gabriel Mountains, where they took turns subjecting her to sexual assault. Disturbingly, they also took photographs of their victim, Andrea Hall, as a sick memento to relive the horrendous incident. Bittaker then demanded that Andrea provide reasons why he should spare her life. Andrea complied, listing her reasons, but Bittaker callously dismissed them as insufficient.
He proceeded to kill her by plunging an ice pick into her ear and manually strangling her. Subsequently, Bittaker callously discarded her lifeless body off a nearby cliff, not far from where he had disposed of another victim, Cindy Schaeffer. With this grisly act, the two killers became further emboldened, their depraved actions forever etched in their minds through the vivid visual records they had created.

After two months of laying low, Bittaker and Norris resume again. Driving through Redondo Beach, they spot 15-year-old Jackie Gilliam and 13-year-old Leah Lamp trying to get a ride to the beach. Bittaker and Norris stop and offer the girls a ride.
They gladly accept and hop into the back of the van. However, as Bittaker drives, concerns soon grow in the girls as they realize Bittaker is driving away from the beach rather than toward it. Bittaker claims he’s looking for somewhere to smoke pot, but the girls’ protests continue.
Norris tries to shut the girls up, but they continue to challenge Bittaker and Norris, exclaiming they want to get out. Bittaker eventually parks at a nearby tennis court, and that’s when the men begin their assault on the girls. Norris hits Leah as she tries to escape as hard as he can with a nylon sock full of BBs, knocking her off. Then he started wrestling with Jackie. Bittaker smashes her in the face as hard as he could as she tries to exit.
The two then notice a nearby tennis player staring at them as he could see and hear at least part of the incident. Bittaker says the girls are just having a medical episode and they drive away. To feel safer, they head back to the mountains.
This time, Bittaker has a new idea to relive the moment. He tape records the whole incident with the girls. The rape the girls. Norris even forces Jackie to pretend to be a cousin that he’s always fancied. The two then decide to kill them. Jackie is first.
Bittaker strikes her with an ice pick and then strangles her. Leah tries to get away, but Bittaker gets to her and hits her with a sledgehammer. Then Bittaker manually strangled her, while Norris smashed her in the head with a sledgehammer. Two more teen lives are thrown away.
5. Shirley Lynette Ledford (March 16-years-old)
On Halloween night in 1979, Bittaker and Norris roamed the streets of San Fernando Valley, searching for their next victim. Their attention fell upon 16-year-old Lynette Ledford, who worked as a waitress at a restaurant frequented by Bittaker and who happened to be hitchhiking home from work that night.
There’s a possibility that Lynette recognized Bittaker from his visits to the establishment.
She accepts the ride and hops into the back of the van. Bittaker and Norris decide not to waste time driving all the way to the San Gabriel Mountains and decides they should rape and torture Lynette on the move.
Within minutes of getting in, Norris tackles Lynette to the ground of the Murder Mack. Bittaker then takes over while Norris drives, raping Lynette. The two audio record the rape of Lynette in which it could be heard Bittaker demanding Lynette scream while he constantly strikes her with a hammer on her elbows.

Norris can be heard lifting the sledgehammer from either the floor of the van or, possibly, the wooden frame of the bed the two had constructed in the rear of the van.

Ledford: No! No! No! No! No! (Scream) Oh no! No! No! No!
Shirley is struck 25 times in succession on the left elbow by Norris, who repeatedly fractures her left elbow. Each time the hammer strikes her, a piercing scream can be heard. At one point, she may have tried to say something, but her voice had become an unintelligible mass of pain.
Norris: How’s that?
Bittaker: (Driving) What’s going on?
Norris: I was just beating on her elbows with the hammer.

Bittaker and Norris then drove to dispose of Shirley Lynette Ledford’s horrifically ravaged, battered, broken and torn body. Her body also bore deep welt marks to the wrists and ankles, indicating just how much Shirley Lynette had writhed and struggled against her restraints.
In one final act of degradation, Norris splayed Shirley Lynette’s naked body face upwards, with arms outstretched and legs apart.
Toolbox Killers Are Caught:
Ultimately, Norris and Bittaker’s own words led to their downfall. It was Norris who foolishly boasted about their crimes to a fellow inmate, who promptly reported Norris’s confession to the police.
Following their arrests in 1980, both men were put on trial for their despicable actions. The legal proceedings that unfolded shed light on the extent of their sadistic behavior, as well as the emotional toll inflicted upon the victims’ families. Ultimately, justice prevailed, but the scars left by the Toolbox Killers’ actions will forever linger.
As a result, Lawrence Bittaker received a death sentence and was incarcerated at San Quentin prison in California. On the other hand, Roy Norris chose to plead guilty and was handed a life sentence for his involvement in the heinous crimes.
