ALBION, MI – A distressing incident unfolded over the weekend as two children were allegedly stabbed and one was nearly drowned by their mother. However, the children are now set to be released from the hospital on Monday.
The incident came to light when a 15-year-old called the police to their home on Saturday morning. Upon arrival, the police officers heard the sound of children screaming and pleading for help.
Body camera footage reveals the intense moments as the officers swiftly responded to the home. They kicked in the bathroom door and discovered the mother, aged 35, holding a 2-year-old child underwater in the bathtub. Acting swiftly, the officer grabbed the child, moved her to the living room, and immediately initiated life-saving measures.
The body camera footage further captures the officers performing CPR and patting the child on the back. Eventually, she coughs up water and begins breathing on her own.
In addition to nearly drowning, the 2-year-old girl sustained two stab wounds on her chest and throat. A 4-year-old boy was also found with cuts, and both children were believed to have ingested cleaning fluid. Fortunately, the 8-year-old and 15-year-old girls residing in the same home did not appear to have any injuries. It was the 15-year-old who made the crucial call for help.
Authorities took the mother into custody and subsequently transported her to the hospital for treatment, as they suspected she had also ingested cleaning fluid.
The younger children were initially taken to a hospital in Jackson and later transferred to Ann Arbor for further care. They are expected to be released from the hospital on Monday.
Albion’s Police Chief commended the responding officers, noting that they had recently completed mental health training to effectively handle such distressing situations.
Neighbors identified the mother as Jessica Deirdre Edward-Ricks, who now faces charges of assault, two counts of assault with intent to murder, and four counts of neglect.
The community remains deeply concerned about the well-being of the children involved in this alarming incident. Authorities will continue to investigate the case, ensuring that the necessary support and resources are provided to aid in the children’s recovery and well-being.
